Breezy but informative text, but the reason for buying this is obviously the photos, which make this worthwhile for those with an interest in Mayan culture, particularly ritual.

Sacred Maya world

An amazing collection of archeological artifacts await the reader who is able to locate this gem of a book. Originally published to accompany a traveling exhibit that boasted the largest collection of Maya ritual life ever assembled., the book reflects the mysteries of the Maya.The artifacts collected and displayed from over 3,000 collected are those that were found deep within the waters of the sacred well or cenote located near the city of Chichen Itza("mouth of the well of the Itza"). This cenote, deep in the jungle of the Yucatan, is like a mini lake, with sheer vertical walls where the Mayans once stood to offer goods or human life to their gods. Having visited the cenote on a trip to the Yucatan once, it made for one of those memorable occasions that last a life time, a step back in time to a world steeped deep in ancient religion prior to the arrival of the Europeans. The cenote was a sacrificial center where the Mayans paid their spiritual debts and honored their gods with gifts made of gold, jade, copper, pottery, wood, textiles, copal and other materials including the ultimate human offering. The objects collected in this book number over 300 and are detailed in full color and black and white. The magnificent pieces are primarily from the Late Classicperiod(A. D. 690-725) through and including the Postclassic period(A.D. 900-1539). The text that accompanies this beautiful book is highly informative but not in an overly scholarly way. The descriptions of the figures sheds light on the subject for the arm chair archeologist in easly understood language without esoteric jargon. Included is a history on the collector, Edward H. Thompson, beginning with his lowering of a bucket in 1904, the burning of his "museum" after the Mexican Revolution and the settlement of the Mexican Supreme Court in favor of Thompson's heirs after his death which allowed the Harvard Peabody Museum to publish this book. Besides the absolute stunning beauty of the creations offered and sheer abundance of objects, the salvaged intact pieces are amazing to have survived so many hundreds of years in the depths of the cenote. At it's height the site rivaled a pilgrimage destination similar to Jerusalem or Rome. This is one of those books that can be viewed over and over again for inspiration or reflection on the arts and rituals of the Maya. Highly recomended for archeology , art or history buffs that want a glimse into a seldom seen collection of pieces that were unexhibited in the Peabodty Museum for over seventy years after being brought up from the silt in the cenote in the early 1900's. These are truly treasures that should not be missed if one is interested in the Maya and the Sacred Well.

Miyoko Schinner has been a vegetarian for over forty years and vegan for over half of that time. She is the author of The Now and Zen Epicure and Japanese Cooking:Contemporary and Traditional. Miyoko, who has an on-line, whimsical cooking show called Miyoko's Kitchen, has been teaching, cooking, and writing about vegan foods for over thirty years. She shares her passion and knowledge of vegan cuisine in her classes, and will be co-hosting "Vegan Mashup," a public television cooking show, starting fall 2012. Great uncheese book

This book is wonderful, but be prepared to have carrageenan powder, xanthan gum (not guar gum), tapioca flour, and agar powder on hand. These recipes are time consuming, but delicious and you may not be able to start these right away unless you have most of these products. In addition, you may wish to make homemade rejuvelac and yogurt ahead of time.
Aside from this, the recipes are delicious and we have thoroughly enjoyed the ones we have tried. The sharp cheddar is very good and that is the one we started with. It takes more than the 3 to 5 minutes (at least it did for me) to cook til completion, but once it comes together, it is worth the effort. I'm determined to fix the mozzarella tonight for pizza. I'm sure it will be equally as good. If not, I'll be back to add to this review. It's a good book and a lot of work went into the creation of these wonderful recipes. Oh BTW, there are different kinds of carrageenan and you may wish to visit some of the resources that the author has listed in the back of the book. Amazon does not tell you the difference between the different varieties.

Worth the effort!

There are a few points I think it would be good for anyone considering this book to realize:

-This is not a recipe book. This is a cheese-making book with some recipes for how to use the cheeses at the end. The difference? Real cheeses are cultured and take time. The same is true of real dairy cheeses, which most of us have never tried making before. Many vegan cheezy recipes in other cookbooks try to use flavorings to make them taste like regular cheeses so they are made quickly. Except for a chapter of almost-instant cheeses, don’t expect to make your favorite cheese for dinner tonight. Understanding this will set the expectations for this book.

-Culturing will also lead to hits and misses as you learn how to do it. My previous experience with culturing before this was with sourdough, which has been invaluable when starting this book. The first few loaves of sourdough I made were bricks and tasted horrible. The ambient temperature, humidity, and the culture that you start with (the rejuvelac or yogurt for the cheeses) will all affect how your culturing goes. Do not tightly close the cultures. Living organisms release carbon dioxide just like we do, and your cheeses may expand in the container, and the pressure of the gas may even make the container break. If you are culturing a thick mixture and it never expands, you probably need to wait longer. I suspect some people who did not find the cheeses to be flavorful were not successful in their culturing. Live and learn.

-The ingredients are important and something that I think needed to be better emphasized in this book (and is emphasized well in The Nondairy Formulary). Only use uniodized salt, as iodine can prevent culturing. Only use filtered water, the chlorine from the tap can prevent culturing. To be safe, only soak the nuts with filtered water too. Rather than buying water, I keep a pitcher of water in the fridge. If it sits for a few days, the chlorine dissipates. For the yogurt, only use soymilk or almondmilk without additives (i.e. soybeans or almonds + water, nothing else), the additives can affect how your cultures proceed. Also, you are more likely to have success with the yogurt using soymilk (versus almond milk). Don’t use nuts that have been sitting around for a long time, if they don’t taste good raw, they won’t taste good in your cheese.

-If you have a nut allergy, do not buy this book. A better one for you would be the nondairy formulary. However, if you don’t have a nut allergy, I find Miyoko’s book to be superior and like that the nuts make the cheeses nutritious.

-If you go into drinking soymilk thinking that it’s going to be the exact same as dairy milk, you’ll be disappointed. But if you drink it thinking that it could be its own tasty beverage, then you can like it. Same for these cheeses. They are not going to fool anyone into thinking that they are dairy cheeses (unless they are a spread or sauce that is very strongly flavored). The texture is different and in some it is possible to notice a slight nutty taste (which I like). But they are tasty in their own right and do have flavors like the flavors of the dairy cheeses.

Other tips:

-It is possible to reduce to the time associated with these recipes by using store-bought yogurt and rejuvelac, and nut butters (look for raw or unroasted, as the roasting will change the flavors). However, I found the yogurt and rejuvelac with quinoa to be super easy and it keeps for awhile. I love this yogurt recipe so I don’t plan on buying store bought yogurt anymore. This yogurt is also clean eating (Versus store bought vegan, which usually has additives to firm it up more). If it is not thick enough for you, strain it in cheesecloth overnight and it will be Greek style (or what Miyoko calls yogurt cheese).

-It is possible to get away without a high speed blender if you have nut butters. Sprouts supermarket here carries store-made cashew butter, and Artisana brand is available at Whole Foods and on Amazon also carries it. Note that the nut butters themselves can be expensive, but it lets you get away without a blender that costs a lot more. For nut butters, replace 1 cup whole nuts with ½ cup nut butter.

-Don’t feel like you have to use cashews. I think the reason cashews are the preferred nut is because they blend the easiest. I find the cashews a little too sweet for some of the milder cheeses. I love using Macadamias in the yogurt (though they are even more expensive than cashews). A cheaper alternative is almonds, though you will probably need a high speed blender for this (unless, if anyone knows of a raw almond butter-do NOT use roasted! the flavor will be different). Brazil nuts may also work. Go for milder nuts if you experiment.

-I personally boil the nuts before using them in these recipes. A lot of my nuts come from bulk bins and I worry about insect larvae. I have found that boiling does not affect the recipe. Just don’t roast them. Nuts roast at a higher temperature and can alter the flavor quite a bit.

-It is possible to avoid using carrageenan if you are worried about it. Miyoko explains her use of carrageenan and that it helps the cheeses melt better. I have been using agar and it works alright. 1 Tbsp carrageenan = 2 Tbsp agar powder = 6 Tbsp agar flakes. I’d recommend the powder over the flakes if you don’t blend the flakes, the flakes do not always dissolved in thick solutions.

-I got this book for Christmas and so far have made rejuvelac, yogurt (twice, once with cashews and once with macadamias), cream cheese, yogurt cheese, sharp cheddar, meltable muenster, nut parmesan, and tofu ricotta. I have made cashew cream previously and it is a great base to sauces or desserts that you might otherwise use dairy cream for (but don't expect it to whip, use coconut cream for that). All have turned out well but again, don’t think it’s going to be exactly the same as their dairy counterparts. I currently have air dried parmesan in the works. I noticed that some other people have had issues with this and it does seem like the drying may be taking longer than the book suggests but I am optimistic. Tasting the mixture before it started air drying it already tasted amazing. Next up is camembert, gruyere, and provolone. Looking forward to trying all the cheeses in this book!

I love to cook, and I have been a vegan for decades. This book is, hands down, the greatest surprise that I've had in the kitchen for a very long time. Wow! Where do I start? I made the rejuvelac, which is a necessary ingredient for many of the recipes, the day that I received the book. (I started it that day.) Super easy. I also made the yogurt immediately thereafter. Again, super easy. Very good results. As for the cheeses, I've made fresh mozzarella, sharp cheddar, basic cashew cheese, chevre, and marscapone so far. These are all very true to taste (yes, I remember the taste of dairy cheese), very easy, and really just in a league of their own. I should mention that I never buy "supermarket vegan cheese," as I do not care for the taste of any of the brands at all. The cheese made from the recipes in this book just knocked my socks off. My husband's too. Goodness! The book is simply fantastic. I can't wait for her next book.

Non Fiction Book of the Month

Fascinating history of money from the ancient Greeks to today. I give this my non fiction book of the month club award..of course subjective since I'm the only one with a vote. I became interested in economics after the crash of '08 and read what was available on Kindle. I should have started here. It's written almost like a text book with a chapter review after every chapter. Easy to read and not complicated; creates a time-line of how money becomes debased, particulary paper money. Good read for everyone whether interested in economics or not. Certainly should give you something to think about. How debased can currency get? I just bought 5 6 trillion dollar Zimbabwe notes for 5 bucks, make great birthday gifts.

Brilliant Book on the History of Money

Given the title you'd think this is just another book complaining about the Federal Reserve. In reality this book is much more than that. It goes into the History of Money and how it was used in the ancient Mediterranean. There is also a lot of history of the American Revolution including why our currency has the same name as Spanish Currency as opposed to British. Not to mention the dollar was first defined in silver instead of gold.

When it comes to the History of the Depression this book really pulls ahead. You may be surprised at some of the campaign statements made by Roosevelt and the actions of Herbert Hoover. This book also has the actual acts used in the gold confiscation. I highly recommend this book for anyone curious about the economic history of the U.S.

You're better off getting the small artbooks that came with the deluxe editions of the games. Those have more concept art than this book does. I wouldve liked more character concepts in the book. It only gives a few,and most of the time its the finished product, not much concept. There are tons of environment art in the book if you're into that.

Nice companion to the 3 Batman Arkham games

This hardcover book comes in at 304 pages. It's big and heavy.

The book covers all the three Arkham games namely Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight.

When I first played Arkham Asylum, I was taken in by the details of the design of the environment and the overall mood. It felt really immersive.

Now we have an artbook that goes behind the scenes to show you what it took to create the games. There are over hundreds of artworks, the concept art that comes in form of sketches, character designs, digital paintings, environment layouts and 3D stills from the game. The artworks are reproduced big and look great. There are things like 3D renders of Arkham Asylum, paintings of streets in Arkham City, props and many more.

I like the art direction for the game. It visually departs from the usual comic style art associated with DC comics. Somehow, the game just makes the world feels more real, just like how the games also let you experience what it's like to be running around in the Arkham universe, or as they call it the Arkhamverse in the book.

There's quite a good amount of commentary and interviews to go with the art. There are creators of the game talking about the design of the game, the characters and the production. There's also a one page writeup on the programming aspect of the game. Overall, it's an insightful read and helps you understand more about the world.

There are some downsides. Arkham City's coverage only has 55 pages while the other two games were given over hundreds of pages each. Not all the enemy characters are included. Would have been good even more enemies, even the miscellaneous ones could be shown. Art from Arkham Knight felt restricted even though there are over hundred pages of content because the book's holding back on the spoilers, the bad guys. They only used game stills (three) for Mr Arkham Knight himself and one piece of concept art. And finally some might prefer less game stills and more art. Anyway it's a small proportion of game stills compared to art, just that some of those stills are blown to double pages.

It's a good book that should appeal to the fans despite the downsides.

The essays in Sobrino's latest collection bear on one of the most pressing signs of the times: the existence of a "crucified people", the poor and oppressed of our world, whose suffering presents Christian faith with an urgent demand - that we "take them down from the cross". Writing from the Salvadoran context, he presents a "theology of mercy", reflecting on the principles of mercy and solidarity as the mode of Christian witness and discipleship in a world of conflict and suffering. In a personal introduction that sets the tone, Sobrino describes the evolution of his own thinking under the impact of the Salvadoran reality. Part One focuses on the essential character of mercy, and on the importance of shaping the mission of the church and the task of theology. Part Two analyzes the crucified reality of the Third World with specific reflections on salvation, forgiveness, and the grace of being forgiven. Part Three presents two manifestations of mercy: the reality of priesthood and solidarity. Finally, in a moving Afterword, Sobrino focuses on his martyred fellow Jesuits of the Central American University, a group who paid the ultimate price of mercy.

Spectacular

This book is the most extraordinary -- and helpful -- Aikido book I've ever read.

I'd never before considered that strikes themselves could be an expression of Aiki, or how powerful they could be within an Aikido framework. Reading this has altered not only my whole approach to studying Aikido but the way I practice my sword art, as well.

To convincingly teach atemi, this book takes you on a small tour of the very heart and guts of Aikido. Many of the most valuable things I learned had little or nothing to do with atemi at all.

I have exactly one little quibble. Von Krenner sensei several times speaks in a horrified tone of Aikido dojos that don't even teach their students how to strike, when Aikido was once known for it's powerful strikes. Well, this book gives you a beautiful primer on when to strike, what direction to strike, where to strike, and why to strike. He even includes a section on inner strength with exercises that he promises will even make strikes stronger.
He just doesn't ever actually teach you HOW to strike.
Particularly not how to strike while retaining a body that is totally relaxed yet expansive, a philosophy totally foreign to most striking arts out there.

But still, it's a good book if my only complaint is that there wasn't more of it.
I'll be waiting for the next book by this duo with baited breath.

An excellent guide to Aiki Jujutsu.

I found this book to be very interesting. It puts a very real picture of the striking aspect of Aikido. Most Aikido instructors, do not teach the strikes, as they used to years ago. This falls back to the days of Daito-Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu. The strike was always taught as a follow up, after your technique was completed, to keep your attacker down, or in some cases, terminate. Sensei Von Krenner, explains and explores these sometimes, lost parts of the art. This is a very good book for anyone wanting to learn the Jujutsu arts. And as an entertainment note, when you see Steven Seagal using his Aikido in movies, remember, a lot of what you see is the Pre-WWII, type of Aikido that was taught by O' Sensei Ueshiba, the founder of the art. He changed many of the techniques after the war, as did the founder of Judo, Jigoro Kano. They both took out the most violent aspects so both would be more acceptable to the Western World. The whole subject of the how's and why's, are really fascinating if you are interested. This book is Excellent as a tour guide to a very effective art.

Great book so far, I will say however that one of the sides is printed awfully blurry. Its still legible but for nearly 200 dollars I expect perfection ;)
