Good Reference for any manual transmission

Good sturdy book with excellent photos. The writing style is very clear and progresses smoothly. Stays generic enough that I can use it for tractors and trucks instead of just a Nissan 300zx like some books will do. Excellent photos both in quality and in relevance.

Wish I had this book years ago...

This book includes wonderful pictures that follow a natural progression. Chapters are written with clear language and definitions of new terms. Chapters 3 (Problem and Diagnoses) and 4 (Rebuilding a Transmission) were my favorites. Chapter 3 walks the user through common problems and how to rule them in or out by isolating certain components. I had a tiny bit of experience with Honda B series transmissions before I read this book and I really wish I would have had this book then. I plan on rereading this book with a scrap transmission just to drive the points home even more. Definitely a keeper that I will refer my friends to!

An Unexpected Path to Healing

This book was a very pleasant and fresh surprise. If you are not familiar with Chakra philosophy, this book will give you excellent tools for exploration and experience of the Chakras. While the focus is on healing of the mind and spirit, much of alternative medicine seeks to affect physical healing through the balancing of mental and emotional issues, and the Chakra system fits with these ideas. This book gives a great introduction to overall healing through the Chakras. However it may seem too basic for readers who are already familiar with this philosophy. Once readers master the exercises and ideas from Heal Yourself, the new yet old world of Chakra healing has been opened, and readers will find exploring this philosophy may be a fulfilling lifelong pursuit.

Finally a remedy for depression and life problems

Finally, there an honest self-help book about depression that doesn't speak from the patronizing position of some therapist whose never actually endured the agonizing pain of unrelenting sadness. Finally, there's another recommendation besides the band aid that is medication and the temporary, sometimes even deceptive, remedy named psychoanalysis. It's Reiki, a theory based on the manipulation of your bodies energies and reconnection to your chakras, the vital life energy residing in your body. Now, ignore everything your logical mind is telling you right now about how completely strange, or bizarre, this idea of body energies is and don't turn away from what very well be your salvation to finally living a happy life because society is less then accepting of alternative spiritual life styles. Consider that the reason you're still depressed, and considering buying this book, or unhappy with life is because you've abided by tradition psychology or psychiatry thus far and it hasn't worked. Just like me you could throw logic out the window and take a leap of faith and be well on your way to establishing happiness in aspects of your life from your sex life, to self-esteem, and your willingness to commit to relationships. Excellent book!

This book is amazing! It's all about being in your face and not being apologetic about it, but also about sharing the pains of one's past. Strongly, strongly recommend it to anyone who is into queer xicana/o latina/o literature/art. Already one of my favorites!

The flow of the stories and quotes, used to enliven the economics, feels like easy conversation. This is the easiest, and hence most “efficient”, introduction to economics I know.

About the Author
Eveline Adomait was born to Dutch immigrants in rural Ontario. She attended the University of Guelph, intending to become a doctor until she realized that she couldn’t use a scalpel on anything alive. This required a change in direction. Fortunately, she was taking an introductory economics course and fell in love with the ideas (and look, Mom... no blood!). She has a master’s degree in Economics from the University of Guelph and for the past 20 years has made her career as a teaching professor at her alma mater. By her calculations, she has taught the equivalent of the population of a small city various economics courses at the first-, second-, and third-year levels. Her favourite is the first year, with class sizes ranging from 300 to 600 students, because this is the year in which many students experience “aha moments” when it comes to  economics. Their 18-year-old minds also keep her young.

Richard Maranta grew up in Brampton, Ontario, and graduated with a Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of Waterloo, focusing on critical theory and self-destructive American authors such as William Faulkner. Richard went on to obtain a Bachelor of Education from the University of Ottawa with the goal of becoming a secondary school teacher. However, he eventually ended up working for the dearly departed Nortel Networks in technical education and communications. He went on to co-found a company called Pinched Head, which develops innovative online courses for corporate clients. Richard continues to write and work with writers to say what needs to be said. For fun, he plays video games but has reluctantly come to realize that that he will never be as good at them as his two sons, who he used to let win.

Outstanding

Without a doubt this is the best opening book to start with, and possibly the only one you might need for quite a while. Oh how I wish this had been available when I started out. What's the first thing a beginner does (ignoring all advice)? He starts surveying all the openings to find a few that he likes (and then changes his mind repeatedly). Before this book that involved buying a book on each opening, at great expense, both of money and time. That's no longer necessary - you can buy this one and get all you need for that purpose. It does expect some experience, but no more than any opening book does.

The book reminds me alot of Watson's Mastering the Chess Openings, except that it's much broader and less deep. It's far less selective and sophisticated than Watson, but it's not superficial at all given the target audience. It gives very good explanations of the general themes, historical development, and early move orders of pretty much every opening you could want, although it does have a strong focus on mainlines. For a beginner or intermediate, this book will give you enough theory to get started - your first half dozen moves with some deviations - but not enough to distract you from tactics and endgames. Coaches should love it. I'm sure they would tell you it's all you need until you are an expert.

The book is targeted at non-Masters. It's perfect for beginners to intermediates - I would say this is an essential book for beginner to Class C. Higher class players would still get a lot of value as a reference for unfamiliar openings they encounter and for broadening their repertoires, but I suspect an Expert would get diminished value from it. It has 450 some pages of large page size and has a huge amount of prose for each bit of analysis.

I bought this expecting to be disappointed by superficiality, but I was wrong. After the fact, it's hard to imagine this book hasn't existed until now. Thank you Grandmaster van der Sterren. Thank you Gambit.

Update: I find myself immersed in this thing all the time - it's addictive. I defy anybody in the target audience to read about their favorite opening and not learn something.

A modern version of "The ideas behind the chess openings"

This book is a miracle. It's fills a gap between more simple opening encyclopedia like Seirawan's "Winning chess openings", Collins "Understanding the chess openings" and specific opening books. This book is in fact a modern and a more advanced version of Ruben Fines "The ideas behind the chess openings". And lower rated chess players (below 1800) should understand the chess opening plans, rather than memorizing openings.

Many chess players (improvers and club players) have bought a book on a given opening, for later find that opening not suitable for them, a waste of money. So in the beginning of your chess career, you should instead buy only one book.

This book!

As an example, this book will probably give you the same introduction and plans in the Sicilian opening, as Emms "Starting Out-The Sicilian", "Fundamental chess openings" contains almost 60 pages with plans and information about the Sicilian opening. That's more than enough for player rated below 1800.

Say goodbye to shelves of chess books

This book is outstanding in every way (apart from the awful 'FCO' title) and provides substantial coverage of ALL chess openings. It addresses both understanding and specific moves and gives lots of unusually well written explanation. In addition it is, I think, superior to comparable alternatives. For example: Watson is far less comprehensive (despite 4 vols), has big gaps e.g. Petroff, and his coverage is both uneven and less practical; Djuric et al is far less deep (despite 4 vols); Collins, though good and comprehensive, is considerably shorter and less focused on understanding; Kallai, though good, is focused primarily on moves; Fine is hopelessly out of date and, in addition, not good. Sterren's opening book is a marvel which makes shelves of my introductory opening titles redundant.
