'The Thinking Machine Mysteries' is a comprehensive collection of forty-four stories featuring author Jacques Futrelle's most famous detective, Professor Van Dusen--the 'Thinking Machine,' who solved impossible crimes.
Professor Augustus Van Dusen, the 'Thinking Machine,' is an eccentric scientist with superior mental powers. He has an assistant, the clever newspaper reporter Hutchinson Hatch, who brings him cases. This model of team work was copied later by many mystery writers, among them Rex Stout in his books about Archie Goodwin and Nero Wolfe. With Sherlock Holmes, Van Dusen shared an unemotional and technical approach to problems, but without Holmes' human weaknesses, such as drug-taking, or Father Brown's moral and political concerns.
Van Dusen exemplified pure thought without human feelings. In 'The Problem of a Dressing Room,' there's an explanation of how the professor got his nickname: Van Dusen recounts how he can't play chess but that after a few hours of instruction he could defeat a master player. When Van Dusen proves that he wasn't joking, and beats his Russian opponent, the man exclaims: "Mon Dieu! You are not a man; you are a brain - a machine - a thinking machine."
In 1912 Jacques Futrelle was returning with his wife to New York on the Titanic in first class. After the ship had collided with the iceberg, she was escorted by her husband to lifeboat 9, filled almost to capacity. When Mrs Futrelle hesitated, an officer forced her into the boat, and she survived the disaster. Jacques Futrelle and several of his stories, which he had written during his stay in England, went down with the ship.

Decent stories, and perfect presentation

I've collected about 100 Kindle complete works so far. I looked for collections that were perfectly packaged, with good formatting, good tables of content, and markers on the progress bar that allow the five-way to move back and forth between stories and chapters. I've found nine perfect presentations: Jacques Futrelle, Mary Rinehart, Tolstoy, Twain, Dostoyevsky , Dickens, Henry James, Eleanor Porter, and Howard Pyle.
I've liked Jacques Futrelle's stories so far. The author died on the Titanic 98 years ago, dating these stories slightly, but they have some good science in them, and intriguing characters. I'm looking forward to reading more.
If I can find out who put this collection together, I'd get more collections from them.

Good, but not great, sure worth the price!

The good: Some creative locked room mysteries, some ingenious solutions, little historical gems that were just 'life as we knew it' when written, but strike the modern reader as so different. (like the 'automobile helmets' the young ladies wear when driving in that fast modern car!)
The bad: Wow, an escaped orangutan that kidnaps a baby? Really? Sometimes the solutions to these mysteries are chosen more for their effect than because they would really make any sense. Large plot holes now and then. And several stereotypes that were accepted then, but not any more!
The annoying: Apparently this is from several books or collections of his stories, because Van Dusen is introduced, including the whole story of how he got his name, his peculiar looks, etc, etc, several times in here, at least 10. That got old. I remember from the last time! But that couldn't be helped, really, without really editing the stories from the way they were written. But would it have been so hard to put the stories in chronological order? That was just sloppy. He refers to this case involving a cockatoo that related to his current mystery, but that story wasn't in the collection until much later. No reason they couldn't have fixed that.
In short, I got this one for the Kindle for 99 cents. I wouldn't have paid much more than that, but since these are out of print and I liked the ones I have read, I thought it would be worth a dollar to give it a try. I'm glad I did - it was fun. I like the old-fashioned feel to the stories, like their complete horror at discovering the three or four day old dead body of a murdered young woman. Now a cop, even a rookie, wouldn't even flinch. Times have changed. But sometimes the dated feel made the stories clunky. The writing was still fresh, though, if not brilliant, and the stories themselves were easy to read. I really liked the one where his wife wrote the first half and challenged him to come up with a solution. Fun stuff.

Bold print throughout is annoying

REVISED 01-13-14: The stories are very entertaining and well-written (by an author who tragically went down with the Titanic). Professor Augustus S.F.X. Van Dusen is the hero whose analytical methods to crime solving earn him the title of "The Thinking Machine." These tales are imitative of those by Conan Doyle starring Sherlock Holmes, and while they are not quite as good, they are nevertheless entertaining in their own right. The $.99 price is terrific and the formatting is ideal EXCEPT for one VERY annoying thing: the text is entirely in bold print. It takes a little getting used to when reading because it feels as if the author is shouting at you. If you can get used to this, it is quite fine. (But why hasn't the publisher fixed this programming error?) Nevertheless, to me, this is a deal-breaker.
Fortunately there is another Futrelle ebook collection which has recently become available in the Kindle Store for the same low price as this but containing 50 short stories. Published by Books Revival Press, its title is "Professor Van Dusen M.D.: The Thinking Machine." Because it has more stories and an attractive (and normal) font, THAT is a superior version. But the version I would presently recommend is published by Timeless Classics; it contains 50 short stories AND 5 novels.
