I have several books, or should I say a lot of books that Robert Schuller has written and have always been able to revive my life from his words of wisdom. Each book as well as this one is easy to read and understand what he is saying. The book is compact and well laid out for research.

"Life in Ancient Egypt"ÿ

Adolf Erman did a very fine job on writing this book. It basically covers what it was like to live along the Nile in Ancient times. His writing is very easy to understand and I recommend it to teachers to read to their classes. Unlike some other books, this one does not just talk about the well known pharaohs but some that I have never even heard of. He also includes many special events. This book was the best I have ever read about Egyptology and covers everything anyone would need to know.

Enduring Quality

Erman wrote this book at the end of the 19th century and it is a testament to his scholarship that the work is still as relevant today despite all our advances in archeology. The preface describes the inundation of Egypt as happening in the authors time exactly as it did for the ancient egyptians (the Aswan High Dam was not built until the 1950's). Erman concentrated on the simple aspecs of daily life as represented in paintings and statuary and he succeeds in presenting an accessible but thoroughly presented account of Egyptian daily life at all strata from Slave to Pharaoh.

This is a book that any one with more than a passing interest in ancient Egypt should own. It covers a wide range of everyday activities as well as the public spheres of justice, agriculture, religion among many others. It is well written and easy to read. Some names are given using older spellings but there is a list of the more modern spellings at the beginning of the book. In general this book tries, and in my opinion succeeds, to present ancient Egypt as much more than just the place where the pyramids and tombs were built. This book with its depth of information is an excellent starting point for more modern analyses of the civilisation. Few texts can match the penetration into all aspects of the civilisation of ancient Egypt that this book accomplishes.

Steven J. Heine is Professor of Social and Cultural Psychology and Distinguished University Scholar at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on meaning, genetic essentialism, and cultural influences on motivations. He has published over seventy articles in such periodicals as Science, Nature, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, and Psychological Review. He received the Distinguished Scientist Early Career Award for Social Psychology from the American Psychological Association in 2003 and the Career Trajectory Award from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology in 2011. He lives with his family in Vancouver.

An excellent review

The books about biological basis of behavior are presently very popular. However, this book shows how interesting and important cultural differences are. Though this book is scientifically up-to-date, it is clearly written and relativelly easy for those, too, who have only a little knowledge of psychology. To give an example: though happiness does have a marked genetic component, the differences between countries are very large. Silmilarly many common psychological disorders in Western countries are quite rare in some other parts of the world. I recommend this book highly. This is also an excellent course book for any university or college.

Cultural psychology is a great book to enter the fascinating world of how culture shapes the way think and the way we act. Many questions can have a cultural explanation, such as:
- why does the US South seem so much violent than the North?
- how does culture shape our parenting decisions?
- are your self-concept and motivation related to the culture you live in?
- is your perception of what is fair and just a consequence of your beliefs or your culture's?
- to what extent is your thinking style influenced by your cultural environment?
Even health is affected by culture. Incredibly, there are mental conditions that are virtually nonexistent in Western societies, whereas others, such as depression, can manifest differently in Eastern cultures. Psychology itself, which was mainly conceived in the West, may not be as helpful in Asian countries.
There are so many aspects of our lives that are governed by culture and amazingly, this explanation had been neglected for centuries. It wasn't until the 1950's that this interesting field began to show its results.

The most succinct, definitive guide I've found for every aspect of quantitative usability testing!

As a practitioner in the usability field, I have come to depend on this guide for my usability testing. It tackles some long held best practices (i.e. - Do I only need to test with 5 users?) and arms you with the information necessary to make an educated decision about whether 5 users is enough based on what your trying to accomplish with the test.

It succinctly answers probably EVERY question I've ever had about performing quantitative usability tests, and answers some I didn't know I should be considering. I can quickly find the answer I'm looking for (because it's organized by "questions") and not lose valuable time during a project.

After having this booklet a while, I became (in full disclosure) big fan of the authors website devoted to "measuring usability" and look forward to his weekly blogs. ([...])

I can't emphasize enough how crucial this guide has been for me and the teams I've worked with. I bought several copies and gave them out to others on our Usability Testing team so we could use it as our "Playbook".
