Language-learning gold mine!

Benny Lewis has done what the masses have been screaming at language-learning book publishers to do for ages, which is to construct a language-learning book that is fun, practical, and teaches you how to learn a language the way you learned your first language. Every language course I've ever taken before reading this book starts you off with learning simple phrases that are useful to know (the "Hi, how are you?" type phrases) and spark your interest in the language (you feel "pumped up", like you've already made some progress in your target language), but then the book goes off the deep end and immerses you into the complex world of grammar, verb conjugation, and a bunch of vocabulary words that you don't care about (just yet); vocabulary words are grouped into subjects, not by usefulness in everyday life, so by the end of the chapter you theoretically know how to say every kind of fruit or furniture, but can't construct a (useful) sentence using those new vocabulary words. With this kind of style of language learning, a hopeful student is quick to become exasperated, like they "just can't learn a new language", as the whole point of learning a language (for most people, I presume) is to be able to communicate with an increased number of people, not to know all the words. Furthermore, we see the spelling of words as we learn them, and maybe there are some pronunciation "guidelines", but these guidelines are no substitute for hearing the words spoken by a native speaker. This method of language learning is not how we learn our mother tongue - we don't learn it through conjugation charts and vocabulary lists, but by listening to how our parents (native speakers) speak and by testing the waters for ourselves. We pick up essential phrases, vocabulary when we need it, and learn through trial and error. This is the idea behind Benny Lewis's language-learning gold mine of a series - to teach us how to learn a language in a way that is fun and in the way we were meant to learn languages. And because most of us are unable to uproot and move to a new country for the sole purpose of learning a new language, this book contains links for audio tracks so you can start to fine-tune your ears to the sounds of your new language - and can start experimenting yourself! Practical, fun approach to learn French in order to speak it

I’ve been a fan of Benny Lewis’ approach to learning language for some time, so was glad to see him issue language-specific guides. Benny takes a very different approach from how schools teach languages. My school French courses emphasized grammar, vocabulary that wasn’t what I’d use in most of my conversations, and getting things right all the time. If you follow this approach, you’ll end up being able to read and write French (eventually), but good luck having a conversation with anyone, even after years of study.

Benny instead focuses on speaking from day one, regardless of how many mistakes you make, and using words and dialogue relevant to you. The course presents a lot of materials in the context of real-life scenarios, and makes you construct your own dialogues using not only words in the course but also words you look up that you would need for your own conversations.

The book is well laid out, with each unit containing a wide mix of material, including transcripts of the audios, helpful grammar hints, pronunciation hints, and exercises. I found some of the pronunciation hints particularly helpful, alerting me to nuances I had missed in other courses I’ve taken. The pictures, color and font make the book seem inviting and friendly, not a scary language textbook. You don’t get bored doing this work! You can listen to the related audio on an app you download to your phone. Once you’re downloaded the app’s files, you don’t need an Internet connection to listen, so you can use it when traveling, for example.

The scariest part of the course is recording and uploading videos of yourself speaking French. I didn’t like this at first, but in retrospect it was an enormous help. By listening to recordings of myself, I could better understand what I really sounded like and what I need to work on (in my case, my accent). That revelation alone made the course worthwhile.

Full disclosure: (1) I was part of a group that tested a beta version of the course. The final version is even better, as the book beats using printouts. (2) I am not a complete beginner, having done some other French study (even since my long gone school days). But it’s a testament to the quality of this course that in its early units I learned some things I didn’t already know.

So if you want to learn French to be able to speak it, instead of just dazzle people with your perfect verb conjugations, Benny’s course is a great way to go about it.

Language Hacking French is one of the best language learning courses I have ever tried. Like other courses, you learn to read and write, but the focus is definitely on speaking and listening, which is a refreshing change. The community surrounding this course is amazing, and Benny Lewis even makes himself available to answer any questions. I definitely hope they continue to produce more books in more languages.

Interesting Twist

After reading part 1 of this book, I said that I was not going to be reading part 2 because of all the grammar errors that were in the book.. But because I found myself curious about what happened to Shoniique, her sister, and Murk I decided to read this book. This book is way better than part one. The plot is the same but there are a lot of surprising twist and turns. There are still grammar errors in this book but it's not as bad as before. One thing that kind of bothers me about this book is that some of the situations seem unbelievable. To sum this up, this book is better than the first, I am planning on reading the next book, and finally with more careful editing this author will go far. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading Urban Literature.

UN missions can be effective by supporting new actors committed to the peace, building governing institutions, and monitoring and policing implementation of peace settlements. But the UN is not good at intervening in ongoing wars. If the conflict is controlled by spoilers or if the parties are not ready to make peace, the UN cannot play an effective enforcement role. It can, however, offer its technical expertise in multidimensional peacekeeping operations that follow enforcement missions undertaken by states or regional organizations such as NATO. Finding that UN missions are most effective in the first few years after the end of war, and that economic development is the best way to decrease the risk of new fighting in the long run, the authors also argue that the UN's role in launching development projects after civil war should be expanded.

Excellent Overview of the UN's Attempts at Peace Operations

Professors Michael Doyle and Nick Sambanis have 'tag-teamed' to present an excellent reference work on the UN's attempts at Peace operations. Earlier works have set the scene in an introductory fashion, however this book examines in methodical detail why certain UN peace operations have succeeded and others have not been so successful.

The authors use extensive data and quantitative measures in order to examine every civil war since the end of the Second World War to establish why conflicts occur. I was particularly impressed at the level of statistical analysis employed; especially their concept of the 'Triangle of Peace'to examine such variables as the degree of hostility, local capacities in the country involved in conflict and how international capacities assist in the post-conflict processes.

The data supports the authors' arguments that the UN is not so good at attempting to enter existing conflicts in a bid to try and stop them. The UN seems more suited at provision of various support specialities in rebuilding after the conflict is over. The authors also provide extensive comparison of UN Missions operating under Chapter Seven and Six of the UN Charter. They contend that a UN Mission is successful only when supported with a good mandate and adequate resources. Comparison of the successes (East Timor and Cambodia) are contrasted with not-so-successful ventures such as Somalia, Rwanda and Cyprus.

I recommend this book to the student of UN peace operations, as well as researchers of this topic, as the authors give substantial data and research methodology techniques in their outline of the various case studies contained within. My one dismay in this book is that, even though it was released two years ago, it does not cover the more recent Missions such as Ethiopia-Eritrea and Sudan. An updated edition is hoped for!

In summary, a great referral source; rich in data and references. Good, authorative explanations on UN peace operations with a wealth of detail and additional reading sources cited in the bibliography contained at the back of the book. Well done, Professors Doyle and Sambanis!

In the few months since I purchased this beautifully illustrated and impecabbly written monograph, John Lautner seems to have become Hollywood's favorite posthumous architect. This month's Vanity Fair features a screenwriter and his wife showcasing their restored Lautner masterwork while virtually every fashion spread in the same issue has one emaciated model or another posing, pouting and preening against a Lautner structure. This wonderful book travels Lautner's career arc from Wright disciple employing the tools and traits of the Master to the emergence of his own distinctive blend of wood, steel, concrete and location that, ultimately, bears little resemblance to his roots at Taliesin. As the text makes clear, Lautner shared Wright's prickly self-absorption and relentless self-philosophizing. However, as the book wanders from one beautifully executed commission to the next, you end up endorsing his sense of self. Like the best of Wright, each structure seems to organically emerge from its site to envelop the owners in a beautifully scaled and very human dwelling. A worthy tribute to John Lautner's artistry and vision.

Great architect, disappointing presentation

It is wonderful to see a book devoted to the houses that John Lautner designed. However, the small format (8.2 x 6.5) doesn't do justice to the details of his designs.

Lautner Illuminated

My revised review of this book:
I initially purchased this book to educate myself when I hired Arthur Dyson, a colleague of Lautner's, to design our home. This is the best Lautner book I have found. It is the hard cover version published by Rizzoli. It includes a comprehensive chronology of his residences and a textual narrative that outlines his professional career. The quality of all the photos is excellent, having very good composition, lighting, resolution, and contrast. I also own John Lautner, Architect by Escher, and Lautner by Barbara-Ann Campbell-Lange. Those are also good books, but not nearly as high quality as The Architecture of John Lautner. For details, see my reviews of those books on Amazon. This picture book of Lautner's work provides a new perspective to the innovative work of the architect. Although many of the buildings are captured in other publications, the images are different than anything out there. Reproduction quality is excellent, as well as composition.

Only way to improve this one is with a virtual tour. It would also be nice if the industry acknowledged this superior architecture - this is art, not just structure, and its truly American architecture. Current architectural trends are decidedly un-American; from Mediterranean, Spanish revivalism to Victorian - its all big time popular, but pure facade when compared to directly to American, European, and Asian modernism....
