?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.

A great version of a great book

This is a new rendition from the Emile Zola Society edition of the novel. The reviewer below thinks this is Balzac. It's Zola of course and the Pastore edition is faithfully updated without it being absurdly modernist.Why audible.com says its "public domain" is anyone's guess. It is not. If you like your books read to you--and most readers do especially if they're in a car, this is terrific.

Dark and Intriguing

Very well written, and extremely dark.

In my quest to read classics this was on my list. I thought it was a great story told so well. However, it's a bit dark for my taste and not something I would have chosen.

The author wove an incredible tale and so many times I wanted to cry or slap someone.

I may not ever read it again, but I am glad I read it. I recommend you read it at least once.

Kate Winslet is a wonderful narrator, with her clear, soothing, and well-paced delivery, and her skilled character acting giving life and personalities to the pathetic characters of Zola's dark realist novel. The twisted plot revolves around human despair, lamentable desire, the rawness of passion, and the darkest strains of human psyche. While the theme and plot is simple and close, it is nonetheless compelling: Zola's language flows beautifully in Winslet's narration, and the dark psychology is not without its pessimistic depth. I wish Ms. Winslet could read all my books to me!

It's Not the Movie

Annabel thinks that her Mother has the best life ever. She doesn't have to do homework, clean her room, or anything that a teenage girl has to do. So one night, Annabel wishes that she were an adult, namely her Mother, that way she can do whatever she wants, whenever she wants, and no one can tell her different. She never knew that her wish would actually come true. Now she and her Mother have switched places, and Annabel sees how hard it actually is to be an adult, and wishes that she could be a teenager again. The only problem, is that she doesn't know how to switch back.
While this is a fantastic book, everyone must remember that it was published in 1972, so yes, it is a bit outdated. But, quite fun and interesting, nonetheless. FREAKY FRIDAY is a welcome breath of fresh air, in a world filled with young adult books, which contain bad language, and grown-up situations. A must-have for everyone's collection, whether you are a fan of the movie, or not.

An all-time great

Contrary to a previous review, I do not consider this a book for babies. I first read this book 20 years ago when I was in the 4th grade, and I enjoyed it. The concept of a daughter waking up in her mother's body is intriguing, and funny. I just reread this book last week, and I was on the floor laughing. Rodgers has written a book that works well with all ages, and I found it even funnier this time around. From the crush on Boris Harris, to the funniest parent-teacher conference ever, this book just moves on and on, and never ceases to be amusing. Even more interesting is the little mystery throughout the book of who is inhabiting Annabel's body that day. As a 4th grader, I loved the premise, as an adult, I love the wordplay, and the whole mixed up situation that allows Annabel to see thw world through an adults eyes. My only real gripe with the book at this point has nothing to do with Rodger;s writing, but rather the cover in paperback. We see Annabel looking in the mirror at a rather frumpish looking mother, which, if you read the book, is not at all how the mother really looks (a better idea is to picture Barbara Harris who plays Mom in the movie, and does seem to resemble the physical characteristics as Rodgers describes them.) If I were not such an advocate of book collecting and preservation, I'd advise you to rip off the cover, but my best advice to you here is to just ignore it. Otherwise, have a great time with this book.

Totally Unbelievable Tale

This book falls in the bottom five of the 28 books that I have read by Wilbur Smith. There is no review of the African continent that is so prevalent in his other books. No intermingling of the diverse peoples that populate this country that you find in most of these books. Here there is nothing here but greed and sex without purpose and typical family squabbles.

To my knowledge diamond mining has never been done in this fashion in Africa.

A: Yes, I have taught these techniques to a 6 year old and watched her memorize the names of the 44 presidents of the USA literally in just 90 minutes. I have also taught a World War II veteran and he was the star of the class. Some people will learn the techniques and become memory champions. Others will just get better at remembering anes

Q: How long does it take to get good at remembering names?
A: It depends but what takes the longest is turning names into pictures and getting pictures in your head for common names. It could take a year to turn 500 names into a picture. But this book does that work for you turning 1600 names into pictures

Q: What is it like to compete in the USA Memory Championship and World Memory Championship?
A: It is a TON of fun. I wish more people would start doing these tournaments. They are such incredible fun and the people you meet who are pushing their memories are just incredible.

Q: When did you realize you had this special ability?
A: I don't have a special ability. Anyone can learn this system. I'm a normal guy who learned a system

Q: What is the most names you have memorized?
A: 128 names in 15 minutes at the USA Memory Championships. As a veteran of the military and war in Afghanistan I also memorized all the fallen heroes from the us military. Itis over 2,300 names and took me about 10 months.

A: How about this: Set a goal for yourself to meet and remember 100 new names this year. Sounds like a lot but it is only 2 a week but just imagine how knowing 100 new people would change your relationships. If I can do 128 names in 15 minutes you can do 100 in 12 months. Oh, for the record you can do 128 in 15 minutes too but you don't believe me now. Get the book and then you will believe me.

Quality textbook

When I first saw this book I freaked out. Mostly due to its size. It is HUMONGOUS and weighs at least 10 lbs. I don't know yet if we are supposed to bring it to class every time. I hope not. But as to content it looks pretty good. I had physics classes before and I can tell if the authors really care about their subject and provide useful info vs. just making an 800-pages monster just to make more dough. The book is good and I intend to keep it (will not sell as a used book). It is a good reference for the future and - let's face it - very good reading :)

Excellent! This book will teach you how to fish. The primary use for me has been to establish a framework for detailing future projects - giving me the "why" and "how" of a WIDE variety of detailing patterns rather than the what. It provides a set of principles in support of detailing projects for protection from water, graceful aging, using the minimum number of parts, etc. etc. etc. etc., and then lets the architect do what architects do best - create meaningful solutions that both accomplish their purpose and reinforce the essence of the project. It goes so far beyond providing cut-and-pasteable solutions.

The "patterns" developed in the book are rich and diverse. Although some patterns are essential for nearly all details of a certain type (i.e. removing water from a wall), many are just good ideas. They encourage the architect to create a "hierarchy of values" for their details and apply the patterns that are most relevant to each detail according to that hierarchy. I could even see an architect explaining how she/he is planning to address a client's needs by pointing to particular detailing patterns that she/he will use throughout the project to ensure quality/efficiency.

By teaching us how and why to fish rather than providing a list of currently popular fish, this book is certain to have a long and useful life. I have no doubts that this will be the definitive architectural detailing text of its kind for both students and new and old professionals for many, many years to come.

When considering architectural merit, we are all too often seduced by elaborate expressions of form and material. Unfortunately, the resulting oversight keeps many of us from discovering a building's more subtle -- yet no less interesting and important -- architectural achievements, often times revealed only through the closer study and examination of a building's details, both individually and as part of a greater whole.

"Architectural Detailing" allows for just that: this well-illustrated book provides a reference for further examination and understanding of detailing systems employed in many of the buildings the stand around us. Taken from Chapter 17: How the barter system worked Most of the settlers in a pioneer community used the barter system instead of money. Instead of taking money to do the shopping as we do today, the settlers would gather up things that grew on their farms and trade them for items in the store. Trade products were sometimes known as "country pay. " Little money was used because farmers did not earn wages. They just grew their crops and traded them for things they needed. Bartering meant trading one product for another of equal value. However, it was difficult for farmers to trade for equal value amongst each other. Someone always owed something to somebody. There had to be a record kept of who owed what to whom. The general store made the barter system work. Instead of trading with each other, everyone brought their goods to the general store. The storekeeper added up what was brought in and what was taken from the store. He kept a record of what people owed or how much credit they had.

An interesting look at American storefronts and markets. It explains products sold and the roles of shopkeepers, but the visuals aren't what I had wished. Some recent pictures of people dressed up as store owners and shoppers. I'd also wished it discussed more about economics in the 18th and 19th century. I will use it occasionally as a reference item, but I have found more interesting formats.
