More! I want more!!

Battle, while mis-named, is a welcome addition to the House Name series. We see Jewel's first days as Terafin, as her power develops and she grows into her new role. Her den likewise mature, and Angel steps into the forefront as the book draws to a close. We learn a little more about the enigmatic Meralonne, as Jewel is propelled toward the Oracle's path. The book does an excellent job of setting the scene for the final book of the series, without giving the feeling of marking time. There is no epic conflict or battle, just a very well-crafted progression of events. I loved the book; Michelle West's vivid descriptions brought some of my favorite characters and events to life, and I had much enjoyment watching the obstreperous cats hiss and grumble their way through events. I ran into the same problem I always have with Michelle West's books; I devoured the book and was left wanting more. No matter how long her books are, they always end too soon!! I was delighted to find that the Sun Sword series and Hunter duology are now on Kindle - time to re-read them and impatiently await `War'.

A story and world that is enjoyable to read

Battle is the fifth book in the House War series and the 14th or 15th book In Essaylien. The author has spent so much time building a truly enjoyable and engrossing world, and continually reveals new bits of information, that the books are just a pleasure to read, and I never want the new one to end.

Tense, tight, and compulsively readable

If Battle: The House War: Book Five isn't the best book Michelle West has written, it's near the top of the list. Tense, tight, and compulsively readable, "Battle" sets the stage for the rapidly-approaching war between the (mostly good) Essalieyan Empire and the (mostly pretty damn evil) forces of Allasakar, Lord of the Hells.

The two preceding books, "House Name" and "Skirmish," devoted a good deal of attention to political struggles for control of Terrafin, the great merchant House. At the beginning of "Battle," Jewel Markess and her allies are firmly in charge, but hostile political maneuvers and assassination attempts -- some of them apparently sponsored by evil demons -- continue.

To further complicate Jewel's situation, the Twin Kings and those who serve them were so unnerved by the power she demonstrated at the climax of "Skirmish" that they are thinking about killing her themselves. (Jewel fended off a demonic attack on the kings from a long distance off, and reshaped their palace at the same time. No one else, immortal or human, is known to possess power of this magnitude.) The heads of the other major Houses make Jewel's position even more precarious by debating whether to support her or throw her to the wolves.

Worse, allies like the wizard Meralonne APhanniel, the dressmaker/reformed spy Haval, and the trader Jarvin are making demands on Jewel and showing their teeth. Even the talking winged cats are showing that they can only be trusted so far ... and Jewel has scars to prove it.

Underlying all of this is Jewel's recently-revealed power to remake landscapes and architecture throughout the city of Averalaan. Her influence over the elements makes her as powerful as the ancient mortals that built and ruled the Cities of Man (first seen in Sea of Sorrows (The Sun Sword, Book 4)). Her influence, however, must turn into control if she is to do what must be done to save the world from the forthcoming hellish onslaught. In addition, there is Allasakar's knowledge that only with Jewel can the good guys defeat him. She has therefore become a focus for demonic attacks, and while those attacks have not harmed her, others have become aware that being around her is rather dangerous.

Despite the title, there is less physical violence in "Battle" than in the earlier "House Wars" books. There is a great deal of conflict, but most of it is expressed in contentious talk and debate.

Much of the talk is, alas, repeated multiple times in this book and in several of the previous books -- talk about the mutual responsibilities between leaders and followers, about how a leader must present herself, about the dangers of various magical things, about the dance of political negotiation, about trust, etc. The repetition bothered me less in this book than in previous books, possibly because so much of it is well and wittily done.

I could complain about other faults in "Battle," like the implausibility of Jewel remaining so immature after so long on the House council and still managing to win the title of Terrafin, or like West's proclivity to launch into ridiculously convoluted language (look out for sentences beginning with "nor" or "neither"), especially in fight scenes, and then quickly transition into simple language filled with contemporary images and cliches (like her paraphrase of Gen. Helmuth von Moltke, "It is said no plan of battle survives first contact with the enemy"). But I won't complain ... any more than I have already.

This may be a "bridge" novel, as others have suggested, but it has enough action, enough intrigue, enough new revelations to stand on its own, as much as any novel of this sort can. West has done an exemplary job of setting up a complex and nuanced web of relationships, alliances, and antagonisms, not to mention expectations for the future. There's every reason to expect an exciting and bittersweet conclusion to the series.

TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER is a surprisingly sweet love story.

Set in 2231, Thierry has been accepted into the Intergalactic Star Pilot Academy to achieve his dream of becoming a pilot. Only problem is he and his brother can't afford to send him there.

Thierry's brother works at a high end brothel and suggests that Thierry sells his virginity in order to pay for his pricey tuition. This really didn't come off as weird as it sounds. It was woven into the plot and world building naturally and came off as a logical choice for Thierry.

The person who ends up buying Thierry's virginity asked to remain anonymous and wore a mask. During their first encounter, Thierry noticed that the buyer had a dragonfly tattoo and started to call him Dragonfly. After Thierry and Dragonfly ended their night together, they stayed in touch. They wrote to each other and continued to make arrangements at the brothel. This eventually led to them falling in love.

In the beginning of the story I loved them together. But towards the middle and end, they became somewhat exhausting. There was a lot of bickering between them and I wanted to reach in and just smack 'em. The epilogue definitely saved it for me though. It couldn't have been more perfect.

I really liked this. It was an easy read for being sci-fi. There was enough world building for me to clearly picture everything, but the story mainly focused on the romance. Thierry and Dragonfly is a couple I'd love to read more about.

Surprising and engaging

Thierry Leroux has been admitted to the Intergalactic Star Pilot Academy and his dreams are all about to come true. But the academy is expensive, and as a Sythe orphan, it's unlikely he will be able to come up with the tuition. His brother, Corbin, works as an escort and gives Thierry the suggestion of auctioning off his virginity to pay for his schooling. It's not something Thierry is very interested in at first, but as deadlines draw near, he gives Corbin the go ahead to set it up. Corbin's boss, Monroe, is more than willing to help arrange the transaction, and they are both pleased when they get a bidder who will more than cover what Thierry needs. The buyer, known only as "Dragonfly" and insistent on wearing a mask when they meet, goes out of his way to make Thierry's first time special, and Thierry is agreeable when the "Dragonfly" asks for them to meet again. After a few such meetings, Thierry realizes he might be developing feelings for his would-be suitor, though he has no idea who is hiding behind the mask. Will finding out ruin the magic and destroy everything?

This was my first Caitlin Ricci title, but I was not disappointed. The character of Thierry is so well-written. Seeing him go from where he is at the beginning of the book, to making his decision, to following through with it, and to living with everything that happens after is an interesting journey. There's subtlety to it, but the dynamic is clear. I certainly look forward to picking up more from this author.

A piece of erotic fluff that never reached its full potential

Alright, I have a bit of mixed feelings about this book. Going in I thought it was going to be a bit of erotic fluff. And the first third of the book was exactly that. It was hot, erotic and sweet. If it had been left there, it would have gotten five stars.

But the author continued to try and built a relationship between an older man and a young guy who have nothing in common, but really want there to be. This happend through circular conversations that were really stilted and not going anywhere. In the end the author 'forced' the relationship through forced separation, forcing the young man to discover who he 'really' is. So in the end, despite the epilogue, nothing was really solved. In a way it was a story about building castles out of thin air.

Because the story was told through a first person narrative, we never get to know any of the characters except Thierry. Corbin, the brother was really interesting though and fun, but I already saw enough of the blurb for his book to know I don't want to ruin my view of him.

As a round up, I liked the fluff of the story. I saw what the author tried to do, but it never really reached its goal. All in all not really bad, but not good either.

About the Author
One of the worlds foremost motorcycle historians, Ian Falloon is the author of twenty books on motorcycles, including ten on Ducati. These titles include the best-selling Ducati Story, and Ducati Twins Restoration Guide. As an owner of several Ducati 750s since 1973 he has a particular enthusiasm for this model, still owning the 750 Super Sport he bought back in the 1970s. Ian Falloon trained as a symphony orchestra oboist before a serious motorcycle accident forced a change in profession. Now a freelance contributor to a number of motorcycle magazines around the world.  He resides in Australia.

Best BMW book

For a BMW airhead enthusiast this is an excellent book. The photography is first class and very useful for any would be restorer. The information provided on the development of the airheads, model by model is both interresting and informative. I particularly like the chapter "Living with an Air-Cooled Boker Twin"

The Book I Have Been Waiting For

Despite later attempts to revile it, it was a tool used by the Magis themselves, the ones who with shepherds, and not priests, visited the ultimate Magus, Jesus, at the time of his birth. The book assures us that we are rightful inheritors of this knowledge, and then, step by step the author walks us through how to use his system. The learning is incremental, with exercises that build on accrued knowledge and make clear the questions and circumstances for which the reading of cards may be helpful.
This is no frivolous undertaking, as the book makes clear. The reading of cards must be approached with care and respect and intention for the highest good. While it is warm and eminently readable, the subject matter is approached with reverence. I loved that.
As someone who is more comfortable with words than pictures, and who finds Tarot an enigma, I love Lenormand because the cards are more language than image. The playing cards feel even more pure, organic, close to Source. This book is all the guide I need to be able to add cartomancy to my reading repertoire. This book has enriched and enhanced my ability as a reader, and I recommend it to novices and seasoned readers alike.

I found Joseph Magi's book to be endlessly interesting, informative, and entertaining. The well-written text briefly explains the Magi method in the context of fortune-telling through the centuries, and from there quickly goes into great detail on how to actually utilize the method itself.

It's clear that the author carries a thorough knowledge of the subject, and while it seems like it could take a lifetime to really master he nonetheless presents his teachings in a clear and concise way that can get you started as soon as you can get your hands on the necessary cards. Highly recommended!

Joseph Magi runs a Facebook Study Group that allows you to practice what you've learned so you can master this system. He starts you off with cleansing your deck and this process alone will make you a believer!

Helpful and Hopeful

Forever Painless may in fact be the resource I’ve been looking for. Up until this point I haven’t been able to find any form of exercise that my body could tolerate consistently. This book gives me hope!

In Part One, Esmonde-White explains the ins and outs of chronic pain and why her approach makes sense. Though she is clearly very knowledgeable on this subject, her writing style makes the information accessible – and really interesting – even for the most medically novice.

The second part of the book is divided into exercises, including a basic warm-up and workouts that target certain areas or causes of pain. The exercises are described with easy-to-follow instructions as well as pictures for those of us that need both in order to figure out what the heck we’re supposed to be doing. (Coordinated I am not) I zeroed in on the Connective Tissue workout and the Immune System workout… but what really impacted me was the question she asks and answers – How can I stretch while I’m in pain? This is something I have asked more than one of my doctors, including my rheumatologist and my neurologist, without getting any helpful answers. I practically have that little section of the book memorized now!

There are many great things about Forever Painless, especially for those of us who have been seeking a resource like this for a while. The information is engaging and easy to understand, and the exercises are doable and well-described. Perhaps the best thing about Forever Painless though is that Miranda Esmonde-White leaves the reader – the person who is weary of pain – with the hope that there IS hope. That we don’t have to simply “manage” our pain, but that complete relief is entirely possible. (At the same time, she is also realistic with some conditions for which a cure from pain may not be achieved.) I am looking forward to incorporating her workouts into my daily routine and becoming less sedentary.

A must have, must read.

As a fan of alternative histories, I bought the first book in this series and was immediately hooked. This is the third installment.
The series takes the reader through an alternate history in which the Soviet Union attacks western Europe following the defeat of Germany in WWII.
Can I just say, wow. The author crafts characters on both sides of both WWII, and the resulting/continuing WWIII (?) that are easy to empathize with.
Many writters have attempted this huge undertaking, but rarely does an author bring such an auspicious task to fruition with such well-though out ease to the reader.
I thoughly enjoyed all the books of this series. I whole-heartedly endorse your decision to by this entire series immediately. Do not procrastinate, just buy them.
Then, a warning, make sure you do not start reading until you have the time to do so. As once you start, you'll not be able, or wanting, to stop. Be prepared for a few days of work suffering from sleep deprivation. You have been warned!

Entertaining But Flawed

I admit I have a soft spot for alternative history and this is actually quite good compared to some other alternative histories postualting a Third World War arising directly out of the end of the Second. But there is a significant flaw right up front that detracts from the pleasure.

The alliance between the Soviet Union and Japan is too far-fetched as is its consequences.

Politically, Japan had six major objectives. 1) Secure the Home Islands from invasion or blockade, 2) Secure Korea as the stepping stone from East Asis, 3) Secure the seas of the Western Pacific to secure approaches to the Home Islands, 4) Secure Manchuria as the basis for industrial expansion and population export, 5) Secure northern and coastal China, 6) Secure the raw materials needed to sustain and expand the home industries. The USSR and the US were the only nations able to prevent the achievement of these goals. The USSR had been neutralized by the non-aggression pact made necessary after Zhukov had spanked the Kwantung Army and put the Japanese on notice that further expansion beyond Manchuria and northern China was unacceptable and unachievable and the USSR's concentration on events in Europe. Japan went to war with the US for these objectives, it would not surrender any of them to the USSR for short term help that would result in long-term disaster. And allowing a Soviet front into and through Manchuria and northern China would do exactly that.

Militarily, the USSR had a small merchant marine. Most of which was involved in the US East Coast to Vladivostock Lend-Lease run. There were insufficient hulls to carry the size of forces postulated in the books. Moreover, the idea of Soviet freighters just sailing into Japanese, Korean or northern Chinese ports to load up with troops is not possible. The US had over one hundred fleet subs deployed in the western Pacific. The primary and many secondary Japanese ports were already mined by both subs and the B-29 effort. They were under constant surveillance. Once loaded, these freighters were supposed to sail to US bases in the Pacific. The western Pacific was a "free fire" zone. No neutral shipping (and the Soviets were neutrals in this case) traveled in this area. Between sub and air patrols, these ships would be spotted and shadowed. And the movement of dozens of Soviet freighters from Japanese, Korean and northern Chinese ports would certainly peak the interest of the US intelligence staffs. Not to mention that the US had penetrated the Japanese naval and merchant marine codes and any traffic about the Russian plan would have leaked to the Allies. Finally, no navy, and certainly the US Navy, in wartime, is going to let any freighters, neutral or otherwise, any where near its fleet achorages or its primary bases.

If there were military actions that the Soviets could take in the Pacific, it would involve the transfer of weapons and ammo, the opening of Soviet Far East ports to the IJN, and air support for the IJA in China. Or they could send a number of freighters heavily loaded with explosives to try to take out US installations in West Coast and East Coast ports and the Panama Canal. And certainly they wouldn't need the Far East Front to conduct offensive operations, leaving the supplies and logistics capability with their forces in Europe.

Otherwise, some other minor comments. The British tried the Indian divisions in north-west Europe in WW1 without success. This would be even more so with the political situation in India. The inflexibility of Soviet command and control, especially at the tactical level do to the shortage of radios wasn't fully reflected nor the eventual impact of the loss of Lend-Lease. The Soviets concentrated on combat vehicles and relied heavily on Lend-Lease trucks. But they still were weak logistically. Every Soviet offensive from 1943 on ran for a couple hundred miles and a couple of moonths and then came to a screeching halt. They then had to build up logistics support for another three or four months before their next push. Other Lend-Lease impacts would be telephone wire. The Soviets relied heavily on field phones and domestically produced wire wasn't fully water-proof, which US wire was. Another issue would be aircraft performance and reliability. The US provided the USSR with all its high octane aviation fuel. Since the Luftwaffe had to run on lower octane fuel, this gave the Soviets an edge in aerial combat.

Equipment missing or not fully exploited. The British MG Bn had both .303 Vickers WC MMGs AND 4.2in mortars. The British Infantry division had not just 3 24 gun 25pdr regiments, but a mixed regiment with 17pdr AT guns and 40mm AA guns. And the British had sufficient armored and tank brigades to support each division with a regiment (ie. battalion) of Churchills, late model Valentines or Shermans. Cromwell regiments had Challenger 17pdr armed tanks in support, while by May 45, three out of every five Shermans were Fireflies. The British had also converted a couple hundred Wolverines (M10 TDs) to the Achilles with the 17pdr ATG. And Corps and Army artillery had dozens of regiments with 4.5in guns, 5.5in gun-howitzers, 155mm M1A1 guns, 7.2in howitzers and US 8in howitzers. British airborne artillery regiments had US 75mm pack howitzers.

As far as the US, US infantry divisions by May 45 had a seperate medium tank battalion, a TD battalion (SP or towed), an Automatic Anti-Aircraft Weapons (AAAW) Bn and extra combat engineers habitually attached. With this and a couple of truck companies from Corps or Army, a US infantry division was fully motorized, a sort of "super" Panzer Grenadier division. Sherman distribution was about 40% Sherman 75, 40% Sherman 76 and 20% Sherman 105. Also every tank battalion had a hand full of up-armored M4A3E2 "assault" tanks. The cavalry groups and the armored recon battalions had replaced M5's with M24 light tanks. 2d and 9th Armored were fully equipped with M26 Pershings and there were over 500 in theater by July. The TD battalions were about 70% SP and 30% towed. SP Bns had M36 90mm gun TDs or M18 Hellcats. Towed had 3in ATG M6 and some 76mm T5 and 90mm T8 ATGs were supplied for troop tests. The 17th Airborne had already recieved 57mm and 75mm recoiless rifles vefore their jump across the Rhine and by July, all three airborne divisions would have had them along with 105mm M3 howitzers in their glider artillery Bns. Airborne divisions usually had one or two additional airborne infantry regiments attached. Every US infantry regiment had six 105mm M3 howitzers which were used as "infantry guns", though some divisions simply added the 18 tubes to their divisional artillery. There were sufficient 4.2in chemical mortar battalions to give a company of 12 mortars to every division. There were dozens of AA battalions with 90mm guns in NW Europe, most with the dual-purpose M2. And finally there was the plentiful US corps and army artillery. 155mm M1, 8in M1 and 240mm M1 howitzers, 155mm M1918M1 and M1A1 (some SP) and 8in M1 guns.

About the Author
Dr. G. Srinivasan began his career as a solid state physicist and later switched to astrophysics. After his PhD at the University of Chicago, he worked at the IBM Research Laboratory, Zurich, Switzerland, Chalmers University of Technology, Goteborg, Sweden, Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge and Raman Research Institute, Bangalore. He is a Past President of the Astronomical Society of India as well as the Division of Space and High Energy Astrophysics of the International Astronomical Union. He is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and a former Jawaharlal Nehru Fellow.

Very clear, enthusiastic, comprehensive

I found this to be a nice intermediate level treatment. There was enough astro and math rigour for someone pretty well acquainted with the relevant theory, but also easy enough for an interested layman to get a grasp of the material. I am looking forward to the third book, especially his treatment of neutron stars.
