What a great find! It is so stylish and a good size too. I think the info is condensed and really useful. The pictures are god too. Only criticism, the retail section was limited for women's clothing stores. But i love the format. Great buy!

Gr 9 Up—This sequel to Queen of Someday (Clean Teen, 2014) is a breezy romance with a thick historical veneer. The author clearly states that she plays fast and loose with historical details and dates. This allows readers to be swept along by the story and not be bothered by the accuracy of events or dates. Grand Duchess Catherine of Russia—the future Catherine the Great—has come a long way since her days as a minor Prussian princess. At the Russian royal court, she must navigate the complexities of court life to keep her hopes of ruling Russia alive. She falls in and out of favor with the empress, who treats Catherine as a pawn useful only for producing an heir. Her marriage to Grand Duke Peter is a sham, mostly due to Peter's completely reprehensible behavior. He is childish and mercurial, which endears him to no one. Catherine comes across as intelligent, brave, and resilient, despite her cruel circumstances. She often sees herself sacrificing personal character for the greater good of Russia. The story moves quickly, and the characters use modern, casual dialogue. Because the author is so straightforward regarding her use of authorial license, historical details blur together. Ficklin does stay true to the large sexual appetites of her historical figures—there are a great number of sexual situations. Sherry is a full time writer from Colorado where she lives with her husband, four kids, two dogs, and a fluctuating number of chickens and house guests. Even Better Than The First

The story just gets better and better and I loved this book even more than the first as it takes us further into the future as Catherine is now married to Peter and we witness more of her suffering. I was immediately swept away by the intrigue and romance. Well written plot with superbly developed characters that seem larger than life. I cannot wait to get ensnared in the third book. I highly recommend this author's books.

Unlike other trilogies, this is a strong middle entry and a quite enjoyable read (4 stars)

"Queen of Tomorrow" did not disappoint. For me, the second novel in a trilogy is usually where a series comes to die, but this book equaled, indeed surpassed "Queen of Someday" in terms of plot, storytelling and character.

The pace was quick and breezy, just as the first novel was, with dialogue for today's audience. No formal, stilted language of Imperial Russia here. The characters were consistent from one book to another. The plot was full of the court intrigue we first came to know in QoS, and the best parts for me, were how Catherine deftly, and intelligently is able to navigate the tricky (and potentially deadly) machinations of court life.

There were only two things that gave me pause: first, so some random guy shows up, pledges his loyalty to you above all else, and boom - he's now your personal bodyguard? Is it really that easy? Don't get me wrong, I liked Grigori just fine, but had to give this the side eye.

The second part of the novel that didn't work for me was (SPOILER) the dropped storyline of trying to find out who pushed Catherine down the stairs, resulting in her miscarriage. Both she and Peter seemed so determined to root out the devil who caused the loss of the precious heir to the throne, then nothing...Catherine suspects Elizabetta as the culprit but doesn't seem to do anything to find out the truth, besides rouse the feelings of her countrymen/women at a dinner so as to get their passive help in finding out who done the deed. END SPOILER

But I cannot lie - my favorite parts of the novel involve Catherine and Sergei. I shipped them in the first novel and am so very glad to see their relationship is still going strong. I just love how these two are each other's best allies, confidantes, and of course, their smoking hot er, 'interactions' (well as hot as can be for a YA novel without getting into anything too graphic).

Speaking of Sergei, something that surprised me in a good way was something that didn't happen in this book. Given how forceful Catherine was in declaring to him that as long as he lived, she would not love nor bed another, I felt for sure Sergei wouldn't live to the end of the book. Catherine's pronouncements read to me as extremely anvilicious, so it was a nice surprise that he was still alive (and as tight as ever with Catherine) by novel's end.

I cannot wait to read the third and final novel. I have faith Sherry Ficklin will do the end of the series justice.

Dying to read book 3!

Book #2 has all of the intrigue, history, and romance that I loved about the first one. Things were a little different this time around though. Peter's wrath gets more intense and there's some pretty dark stuff that readers will have to deal with. The story takes you back and forth between two castles and courts. I was surprised to find out I didn't want to leave Winter Palace as much. After reading the first book, it kind of felt like home.

There is great character development for our dear little Sophie. After the heartbreaking events in Queen of Someday, she is certainly hardened. She has a lot of tough decisions to make and there isn't always a "right one". After she is finally pushed to her breaking point, she resolves to do something I don't think anyone saw coming.

Ficklin's story telling is beautiful and brilliant, as always, and I didn't want this book to end. I think the only real problem I have with these books is that they're too short! I'm definitely getting the conclusion, Queen of Always, soon, so catch up to me and watch out for the review!

Thrilling and educational read.

This three part book series on Russian criminal tattoos is the result of a Soviet prison guard’s research. Danzig Baldaev didn’t intend to become a prison guard; he was forced to take the job under the Soviet regime. His ancestry is an illustrious one, and his family is an illustration of Russia’s history. His ancestors were Mongols who became Christians, and had a perfectly good relationship with the Russian Czar. They were tough people, always ready to defend their families and property from the escaping criminals who frequently entered their area. But Communism destroyed his family; some fought for the Reds, others for the Whites, and they were both agents and victims of Soviet cruelty. Danzig would grow up in a boarding school for children of “enemies of the state,” most of whom came from educated bilingual families. As an adult he would be assigned (by law not by choice) to be a prison guard. For decades, he drew the prisoners’ tattoos. This book is the result.

The tattoos in this book are entirely political. The all have the same imagery; cats symbolize thievery, and the thieves were the top dog in the jails. Stars refer to the number of years served, and playing cards represent risk. But the designs show a great deal of anger as well. Anti-Soviet images are commonplace, with the faces of Lenin, Marx, and Stalin drawn with horns. Anti-Jewish and anti-Asian motifs figure among the tattoos, because the Asian and Jewish people were probably seen as unwanted foreigners. Nazi swastikas and SS runes are frequent, because they symbolize contempt for the Soviet system. A tattoo of a nude woman means that the wearer hates his last girlfriend, perhaps she betrayed him. American symbolism is common in this book as well. Skulls and cats wear cowboy regalia, the Statue of Liberty is shown covered in barbed wire. It appears that the anti-Soviet criminals looked at the USA a beacon of liberty, and since they hated the Soviets and the Soviets hated the USA, it was the perfect statement.

Soviet Justice was harsh. A teenage boy who got drunk and punched someone could get six years in jail, and on getting out would have no idea how to ask for a job or be on time for work. The depressing life of the Soviet Union probably drove people to alcoholism, and that would’ve led to crime. Food was scarce and people must have been hungry enough to steal from officials. I also have to wonder how many kids were born with fetal alcohol syndrome.

My hat’s off to Danzig Baldaev for keeping this archive. You can learn a lot about a society by studying the prisons, and it makes sense to judge a nation by how they treat the prisoners. As for the book itself, it’s part of a three part series, plus a set of cards that come with it. Perhaps we’ll soon see books on prison tattoos from other nations as well.

Eye opening

Eye opening into the culture of Russia and it's underground language of tattooing. In America, tattoos are seen as freedom of expression and the free-natured thought. In Russia, it's a rite of passage and one's personal history written on their bodies. The hand tattoos sysmbolize is the most interesting. Explains a lot about the tattoos seen in the movie "Eastern Promises."

The Ansei Edo earthquake shook the shogun’s capital during a year of special religious significance and at a time of particularly vigorous seismic activity. It was also a turning point because, according to the prevailing understanding of earthquakes at the time, it should never have happened. Many Japanese, therefore, became receptive to new ideas about the causes of earthquakes as well as to the notion that by observing some phenomena―for example, the behavior of catfish―one might determine when an earthquake would strike. All subsequent major earthquakes in Japan resulted in claims, always made after the fact, that certain phenomena had been signs of the impending catastrophe. Indeed, earthquake prediction in Japan from 1855 to the present has largely consisted of amassing collections of alleged or possible precursor phenomena. In addition, the Ansei Edo earthquake served as a catalyst accelerating socio-political trends already underway. It revealed bakufu military weaknesses and enhanced the prestige of the imperial deity Amaterasu at the expense of the bakufu deity Kashima.

A very thorough and well documented history of one of the two most recent massive earthquakes to strike the Kanto (Tokyo) region of Japan. In addition a lot of additional material about some of the other major historic earthquakes to strike Japan. The author draws some parallels with the Great East Japan earthquake of 2011 and clearly identifies equally massive earthquakes and tsunami which preceded the 2011 temblor and which should have served to forward TEPCO of what they could expect for their reactors in Fukushima and what they should have been prepared for.

At times a bit repetitious but on the whole well worth the time spent to read it.

A powerful and important read--not just another "Holocaust book"

With so many books on the Holocaust in print, it's rare to find a work that makes one feel that they are hearing a "new story." And this is precisely what Gong offers. The work resonates on two levels. First, the photos and Kaddish's account add to a critical base of documentary evidence of the most basic level. Second, Gong not only provides us with insights in the photographer, her own journey is equally compelling. In sharing her journey, the relevance of this individual story underscores the import of every story of racism, prejudice and intolerance. During the course of reading this I was disturbed, at times moved to tears and ultimately, with the closing excerpt from Dr. Martin Luther King's "I have a dream", uplifted. It was an experience I heartily and most highly recommend to others.
